Why Should A Nurse Get A Nursing Degree

Historically, nurses have been seen as a type of handmaid to the doctor, and have always assumed a second class type of role within a hospital environment. This is despite the fact that most nurses have a far higher level of expertise than many doctors who come onto the wards - especially if they are specialising in a particular area. Nurses were not encouraged to go to University, and a nursing degree course was not available for many years. Nursing has come a long way within the last fifteen to twenty years, and now within the 21st century registered nurses are accorded the respect from both the medical staff and patients that they deserve. This is mainly because the way nurses are educated has changed so drastically. Until fifteen years ago, the education of nurses was undertaken within training schools in hospitals, but now they are trained within universities with many of the nurses of today qualifying with a formal nursing degree. The need for improved education does not stop with those nurses emerging from university with a nursing degree; many older nurses find they are being positively encouraged by their employers to take up the reins of education and study for a nursing degree in their particular speciality. This is an essential movement within many hospitals as the change of junior doctors’ hours has often meant a radical shift of responsibility for many specialist nurses who are taking on more and more of the junior doctor’s role. This can often only be achieved when the nurse has studied for her nursing degree. What this means in practice is nurses are now being used in essential programs to help train junior doctors as well as other nurses in their particular speciality. There are specialist nurses for practically every speciality (In the UK), and these people are highly qualified and knowledgeable about their subject. This knowledge has been learned not only from their on the job experience, but also from attending university and earning their nursing degree. There is a very positive future for qualified nurses within the UK. Emphasis is on continuing education and this aids the nurse specializing within a particular area of the nursing field. Nurses with the necessary qualifications and knowledge to continue learning will find the ability to obtain a nursing degree made readily available to them.
